Activated carbon for gases and air

Activated carbon for gases and air

For the purification of air and gases we mostly use extruded (pressed pellets) or coarse-grained (granular) activated carbon. Typical applications for gases and air are:

  • air purification and environmental protection: removal of solvents and hydrocarbons, deodourisation, purification of air from air conditioning units and cooker hoods, processing of flue gases. In powder form activated carbon is used for the removal of dioxins, mercury and other trace elements;
  • purification of process gases; removal of contaminants from hydrogen, natural gas, carbon dioxide, landfill gas…; solvent recovery …;
  • breathing protection: gas masks, removal of harmful and toxic substances;
  • storage tank ventilation
  • groundwater remediation (strip air);
  • removal of inorganic compounds from gases;
  • molecular sieves.

An overview of Desotec solutions for the purification of gases and air. Desotec Activated Carbon is packaged in standard 20–25 kg bags or in 400–500kg big bags, stacked on pallets per 500kg. Alternative forms of packaging are possible upon request.

Impregnated activated carbon improves air purification

To further improve the action of activated carbon for air purification we can impregnate the activated carbon with chemicals. This results in chemisorption, which reinforces the adsorption.

The benefits of chemically impregnated activated carbon have been proven for:

  • purification of waste odours, removal of chemicals…;
  • desulphurisation of natural gas;
  • removal of mercury during the production of hydrogen gas;
  • fume purification in laboratory fume cabinets;
  • water treatment in bacteriostatic water filters;
  • removal of war gases from NBC filters and gas masks (pursuant to international standards such as CEN and NIOSH).
