Open or closed filters

Activated carbon (grains or pellets) is usually put in open or closed filters, also called adsorbers. Closed filters are used for most industrial applications. The design of these filters ensures that the flow of liquid or gas that needs to be treated is pumped under pressure through the filter and over the carbon. For drinking water applications we mainly use open filters, whereby the water flows through the activated carbon beds by gravity.
