The advantages of activated carbon installations are numerous: they offer solutions for various treatment challenges at companies while offering very high performance. A disadvantage is that the exothermic adsorption process can potentially create a hotspot in the activated carbon filter. In numerous industries risk assessment is of capital importance to the continuity of the integral business process. If an activated carbon installation is part of this process, it is essential to have it work with the highest possible performance and safety.
Adsorption of contamination by activated carbon is an exothermic process, meaning there is the inevitable release of heat. The risk of the formation of such hotspots depends on the incoming concentrations and the presence of certain components such as acetone. There is also an increased chance of overheating with the blockage of the activated carbon filter or an imbalance in the distribution of the load across the whole carbon bed.
The Inerti Box accommodates this heat development by rendering the activated carbon filter inert. It is a closed system that is connected to the nitrogen network at a company, putting the filter under nitrogen pressure to fully preclude the oxygen supply (an important accumulator with heat development). This fully autonomously working solution automatically starts operating when too high CO development is measured, and an alarm is raised. Then the appliance automatically goes into safety mode and controls the integrated PLC valves that send an adapted amount of nitrogen over the activated carbon filter. The mobile activated carbon installation is then temporarily put on hold.
The Inerti Box gives companies using rented activated carbon installations a guarantee for the permanent and safe functioning of their air-conditioning systems. At DESOTEC’s facilities, all used carbon is analysed so the right measures can be taken for handling and removing the saturated carbon out of the mobile filters. All molecules that were adsorbed on the activated carbon at the customers’ site, are desorbed inside DESOTEC’s reactivation furnaces. These contaminants are then fully destroyed, in accordance with National and European legislation, by an incineration and neutralisation setup. The entire installation and it's emissions are under continuous on-line monitoring, which guarantees that only harmless water vapour is seen exiting the chimney.
