Clean groundwater thanks to a hydraulic barrier

For the longest time, the potential of groundwater went ignored. It was used solely to water the plants, fill the swimming pool or the pond or to water the family pets. Nowadays, an increasing number of businesses and private consumers are using groundwater for a whole range of different purposes. Especially as you can easily use it indoors, saving yourself a lot of mains water in the process.

Clean and healthy groundwater

If you are looking to use groundwater without risk, you want to make sure it is safe and healthy, not to mention free from harmful pollutants. The government requires nearby businesses to prevent or remedy contamination, with a particular focus going out to micro-pollutants, such as ‘adsorbable organic halides’ or AOX. These agents do not degrade well. They linger inside the groundwater for a long time and build up inside living things (bioaccumulation). 

Hydraulic barrier

Micro-pollutants are ubiquitous. These substances are generated or used by many businesses. A typical example is manufacturers of crop protection products, such as pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. In spite of all the precautions put in place, there is always a risk of leaks or unintended spills. Through the rainwater, these agents or their active ingredients seep into the groundwater. In this case, a hydraulic barrier could be just the right resort. The groundwater is pumped up on the edge of the company grounds, after which it is treated and returned to the water cycle, clean and safe for human and environmental health.

With this particular application in mind, DESOTEC has devised a range of mobile filters: MOBICON®. These filters can be used on all flow rates. The persistent molecules or micro-pollutants are accumulated in the activated carbon through adsorption and are subsequently destroyed in our recycling plant. We have all the relevant expertise to help you build a hydraulic barrier and prepare an accurate operating budget.

 

At DESOTEC’s facilities, all used carbon is analysed so the right measures can be taken for handling and removing the saturated carbon out of the mobile filters. All molecules that were adsorbed on the activated carbon at the customers’ site, are desorbed inside DESOTEC’s reactivation furnaces. These contaminants are then fully destroyed, in accordance with National and European legislationby an incineration and neutralisation setup. The entire installation and it's emissions are under continuous on-line monitoring, which guarantees that only harmless water vapour is seen exiting the chimney.
