The design, construction and operation of wastewater treatment plants are no easy tasks. In some cases the chosen wastewater treatment technology even does not allow achieving emission limit values and requires some modifications to work properly.

One of the largest petrochemical refineries in Poland was in need of a solution for their wastewater treatment, as the already existing physicochemical and powder activated carbon installation did not suffice in order to reduce the COD to the required level.

Desotec joined forces with the customer to find the best possible solution in their five-step process:

After in-depth analysis of the application, DESOTEC executed a series of feasibility tests and analyses in its R&D laboratory in order to find a better suited type of activated carbon. It was found that certain types of granular activated carbon were able to easily reach the treatment objective and give the advantage of reactivating the waste product, as opposed to the current process of incinerating the spent powdered carbon. Because both activated carbon and mobile filters are immediately available from stock, DESOTEC was able to deliver in a very short time a MOBICON® 2000 filter filled with the selected grade of ORGANOSORB®activated carbon.

After some on-site testing, it turned out that the wastewater flow rate was going to be increased beyond the design of the current setup. Luckily the mobile filter concept offered by DESOTEC allows the customer to change the number and the size of the units without suffering any additional costs. After saturation, the delivered filter was thus replaced by a bigger unit with longer lifetime and reduced operational costs.

As a final solution, two MOBICON® filters will be installed in series. In this way activated carbon exchange frequency and its costs will be reduced even further. Thanks to the unique design and transport method, these filters can be exchanged in a very short time without the need of on-site manipulations. The saturated activated carbon will be reactivated so it can be reused in the customer’s process.
