Reactivated carbon ensures lower CO2 emissions.
The emission of greenhouse gases has been a major point of discussion for years, and the issue is becoming increasingly important in response to pronounced weather phenomena (major droughts, heavy precipitation, hurricanes,…) that manifest themselves increasingly frequently.
For that reason, it is important to map carefully everyone’s responsibility for the impact of the emissions from their own activities, in order to take decisions on this basis to reduce as far as possible the environmental impact of their activities.
DESOTEC is a company that provides purification solutions based on adsorption techniques using activated carbon. DESOTEC’s new activated carbon is produced in various countries and regions in South East Asia. The raw materials used and the quality of the end product eventually achieved determine the CO2 impact.
DESOTEC has decided to chart the CO2 impact of its product flows. This is for both the new activated carbon, as it is produced in South East Asia, and for DESOTEC’s own recycling activities in Roeselare, Belgium.
For its calculations, DESOTEC has made use of the Méthode Bilan Carbone (Carbon Accounting Method) in collaboration with an accredited consultancy bureau. In the scope of the new activated carbon the entire logistical chain right up to supply to a customer located at a distance of 500 km from DESOTEC Roeselare was included.
In the scope of the recycled carbon, the fact that the used carbon has to be collected for recycling from customers located at a distance of 500 km from DESOTEC Roeselare was included. Resupplying the recycled product to the same customers was also taken into account.
The calculation provides a clear picture. Depending on the region of origin, the raw materials used, the energy mix used during production and the quality achieved, new activated carbon has a CO2 impact that varies from 7.05 to 12.92 tons of CO2 equivalent per ton of finished product. Recycled activated carbon has an average CO2 impact of 1.03 tons of CO2 equivalent per ton of recycled product.
DESOTEC will continue to invest in new systems for recovering the maximum amount of used activated carbon from its customers, so that it can be recycled without suffering any loss of quality in the products or services supplied.
