Impregnated activated carbon

To further improve the action of activated carbon, we can impregnate the activated carbon with selected chemicals. Impregnation of activated carbon gives the activated carbon additional properties such as chemisorption properties, which reinforces the adsorption or can result in bacteriostatic properties by controlled, low silver leach in point of use (POU) or point of entry (POE) home water appliance filters.

Types of impregnated activated carbon

DESOTEC offers several solutions with impregnated activated carbon for gas phase applications. This list is not exhaustive and only contains the most common types. Other types needed? Don’t hesitate to contact us.

  • R-PURE® 1DA is a range of extruded impregnated activated carbons with enhanced adsorption capacity for ammonia and volatile amines, especially developed for air and gas purification applications.
  • R-PURE® 1DM is a range of extruded impregnated activated carbons with enhanced adsorption capacity for mercury, especially developed for air and gas purification applications.
  • R-PURE® 1DS is a range of extruded impregnated activated carbons with enhanced adsorption capacity for H2S, SO2, mercaptans and acid compounds, especially developed for air and gas purification applications.
  • AIRPEL® ULTRA DS-5 is an extruded impregnated activated carbon with enhanced adsorption capacity for H2S, SO2, mercaptans and acid compounds, especially developed for air and gas purification applications. The product is designed for fast adsorption kinetics and high sulphur loading capacities.
  • AIRPEL® ULTRA DS-6 is an extruded impregnated activated carbon with enhanced adsorption capacity for H2S, SO2, mercaptans and acid compounds, especially developed for air and gas purification applications. The product is designed for fast adsorption kinetics and high sulphur loading capacities.

The AIRPEL® and R-PURE® impregnated product ranges are produced by steam activation from selected grades of anthracite coal, ensuring a constant quality and high hardness, and are then impregnated with selected specific chemicals for an excellent chemisorption capacity for the targeted application. As our AIRPEL® and R-PURE® impregnated product ranges are available with different selected chemicals and several shapes and forms, you can always contact us to help you with the product selection for your specific application.

Benefits of impregnated activated carbon

The benefits of chemically impregnated activated carbon have been proven for:

  • Mercury removal from natural gas purification of waste odours, removal of chemicals…;
  • Desulphurisation of biogas;
  • Removal of mercury during the production of hydrogen gas;
  • Fume purification in laboratory fume cabinets;
  • Home water treatment in bacteriostatic water filters;
  • Removal of war gases from NBC filters and gas masks (pursuant to international standards such as CEN and NIOSH);
  • Removal of ammoniac and amines from air.
