History

1990

Founded by Joost Desmet and Bart & Peter Sobry. Initially, DESOTEC activated carbon designed and built different types of installations for water treatment and sludge processing.

1995

DESOTEC activated carbon specialises in activated carbon with the focus on environmental applications for the purification of liquids and gases. DESOTEC activated carbon starts to develop and offer tailor-made fixed bed activated carbon filters and interchangeable mobile filter systems to make the use of activated carbon simple and easy. The AIRCON® mobile adsorption systems are designed to purify gases using the AIRPEL® range of products, while the MOBICON® systems are used to purify liquids with the ORGANOSORB® range of products. Today DESOTEC activated carbon has the largest fleet of mobile activated carbon filters in Europe.

1998

DESOTEC activated carbon develops OXYCON®, a hybrid technology whereby the activated carbon filters are aerated. Within this context the company is nominated for the Filtration and Separation Product Achievement Award.

2003

DESOTEC activated carbon starts with the construction of its own environmentally friendly reactivation furnace to recycle spent activated carbon by thermal reactivation for reuse. This reactivation kiln, specialised off gas treatment and continuous exhaust gas monitoring are unique in Europe.

2006

DESOTEC activated carbon constructs a new plant with over 5,000m² of storage space and a special zone for the handling of activated carbon and a completely new office building.DESOTEC activated carbon establishes DESOTEC POLSKA with production facilities and offices in Gdynia (near Gdansk).

2009

DESOTEC activated carbon expands the reactivation capacity with a 2nd reactivation furnace. But this is not all… Further investments are done in the expansion of the fleet of mobile filters, also for the treatment of biogas, and in a special designed truck for the exchange of activated carbon in fixed filters, discharging and loading with the same truck.

2011

AAC Capital Partners, a leading Northern European mid-market buy-out firm, acquired a majority stake in DESOTEC activated carbon whilst the company’s founders retain a significant minority interest.

2012

DESOTEC POLSKA opens a new service centre in Gdansk with a new warehouse, workshop and modern sales offices.

2012

DESOTEC activated carbon develops and patents the world’s largest mobile air treatment filter system, the AIRCON® V-XL. The system consists of a fixed part, the AIRCONNECT®, on top of which the AIRCON® V-XL is positioned. This fixed part is connected directly to the gas to be treated which makes the need of flexible connections superfluous. The AIRCONNECT® – AIRCON® V-XL has a revolutionary design which results in the world’s first real click-and-start activated carbon filtration system for gas flow rates up to 55,000m3/h per unit.

2013

DESOTEC IBERICA. The new branch is located in Tarragona not far from the harbour with sales offices, 1100m2 warehouse and 1200m2 outside storage.

2015

CEO Mario Hertegonne develops and implements with his management team a Pan-European strategy to roll-out DESOTEC’s leadership position in purification solutions with mobile activated carbon filters for 5 markets segments: Air Emission, Biogas, Chemicals, Remediation and Waste Water.

2015

DESOTEC inaugurates its second distribution centre : new warehouse facility of 4500 m² under roof and 10 extra fiilling stations for big filters. Desotec inaugurates as well its third reactivation furnace in Roeselare, enhancing its leading capabilities to reactivate industrial spent activated carbon.

2016

DESOTEC doubles its capacity at its mobile filter technical department in Izegem in order to accelerate its growth in mobile filters. DESOTEC establishes Desotec Italia to support its growth on a Pan-European scale.

2017

The Swedish investment fund EQT buys Desotec from the previous investor AAC and its founders.
The current management led by CEO Mario Hertegonne is also investing in the acquisition structure.
EQT will support Desotec in further growth and development through international expansion and the investment in reactivation capacity and mobile filter fleet.
