The Problem
This Spanish plastics manufacturer had long known the added value that activated carbon brings to the treatment of wastewater and air emissions. It teamed up with a supplier who installed a number of filters on site.
Unfortunately, the manufacturer found that the service left much to be desired. The installations were unreliable and in poor condition, and the manufacturer frequently had to replace defective parts. It could not count on quality support from its supplier.
It was vital that the manufacturer could ensure site safety and business continuity. Therefore, it got in contact with DESOTEC to enquire about our services.
The Solution
After a careful analysis of the situation on site, DESOTEC proposed a new solution. This would optimise the layout and improve the configuration of the installation.
The new concept consists of 40-50 mobile filters, each containing between 2m³ and 20m³ of activated carbon. The AIRCON filters handle the air emissions, while the MOBICON filters purify the wastewater.
One major advantage of this new solution is that once the carbon is saturated, DESOTEC reactivates it, driving down costs and boosting sustainability. The previous supplier did this only on a very limited scale.
Considering the filters at this site must adsorb high volumes of chlorine, this is a considerable achievement.
The Results
The new installation has been operational since early 2017, and continues to meet the customer’s satisfaction. It has quickly proven to be essential to the production processes at the company.
DESOTEC’s proactive approach has been a big win for the customer. As our filters are mobile, we exchange units when the carbon is saturated. We inspect, clean, and maintain the old unit, and repair or upgrade it if necessary before returning it to use.
On safety and regulatory grounds, the manufacturer cannot afford to allow this installation to malfunction. DESOTEC’s engineers are just a phone call away 24/7. However, this set-up has been problem-free since its installation, and the manufacturer now sleeps soundly at night!
What’s more, DESOTEC handles all filtration waste safely and sustainably. Saturated filters are transported away from the customer’s site to our facilities, where adsorbed molecules are completely destroyed in accordance with national and European legislation. The carbon is then reactivated, boosting companies’ bottom lines and helping them meet their green goals.
The entire installation and its emissions are under continuous online monitoring, guaranteeing that only harmless water vapour exits the chimney.
